That's only 96 berths to go out of a total of 420 available for the year - excellent progress considering it's only April; but let's make a real effort to sell the rest now!

* Voyages marked with an asterisk are part of the Tall Ships Race series, for which we can take up to four crew aged 15; all others must be 16-25. Potential crew members who will be aged 15 this summer should contact the office to discuss which legs have not already had bookings from the full quota of 15 year olds.

All other voyages can take crew members aged 12-25.

Voyage news
An excellent voyage this week, with several crew members who were experienced dinghy sailors mixing with a few who had never sailed at all; but the group gelled well and turned themselves into a highly effective team.

They started in Ocean Village and went down to Cowes on the first evening. The second day was a really big sail training day in the western Solent, with masses of tacking and gybing and everyone taking turns to steer, before finishing the day in Yarmouth.

On Monday they had a busy day sailing to Weymouth, taking reefs in and out and doing lots of headsail changes. Tuesday morning was spent in Weymouth, and in the afternoon they headed towards Poole, anchoring in Studland for tea on the way in order to give people some night sailing into the harbour. Wednesday came in with force 7 winds, and they sailed back to Southampton under the no.3 (our smallest headsail apart from the storm sails) and double-reefed mizzen. It was a fast passage but lots of rough water - yet, amazingly, no-one was seasick!

Hels says that the crew members really threw themselves into the experience and put maximum effort and enthusiasm into the voyage. There were several who would be excellent Tall Ships Race crew, and a few potential sea staff - plus a really brilliant contribution made by some younger ones. A number of RYA Competent Crew and one Start Yachting certificate were earned. Crew members from this voyage who are reading this and are interested in becoming sea staff or sailing in the Tall Ships races should reply to this email and we can look at some options.

Sea staff were Nick Crawford, Hels, Mike Makepeace, Andy Royse (making a rare appearance in the role of relief bosun as Dings has taken a much-deserved break), plus Tim Hughes - who passed his third mate's assessment and will undoubtedly go on to cause much confusion with existing third mate Tom Hughes. Tom is doing his 2M assessment later this year and after that I will try and schedule them to sail together...

Sea staff bookings
Apart from the urgent vacancies listed above, we still have a number of spaces to fill in the autumn; and we do get other spaces at short notice when people drop out. So if you'd like to do more sailing this year, please drop me an email and we can discuss your availability - and I'll try and fit you in.

We are now taking bookings for the autumn mates training weekend 22-24 September (£150) and adult familiarisation voyage 25-30 September (£275).

Please email me to make sea staff bookings or reserve places on adult voyages.
