Training / AGM - THIS WEEKEND 18/19 Feb

Anyone attending a training course this Saturday or the AGM on Sunday: if you have any last minute questions, please call me on 07986 354697. Still a few places left on radar and first aid courses if anyone wants to come.

Second mate needed 20-24 March

I had been advertising for a female second mate for this voyage but the boat has now been booked by an adult group which means we don’t necessarily need any female sea staff, so I’m simply looking for any second mate who can do the trip. The crew will be youth leaders from West Sussex.

Gizmo

Kathryn “Gizmo” Francis has now left the refit to take part in the new ASTO training scheme to produce the sail training first mates and skippers of the future. Gizmo joined us as a full-time volunteer for the 2004-5 refit. She sailed with us for much of the 2005 season, qualifying as a second mate as soon as she reached the age of 18; and she has been involved for most of current refit. Thanks to Gizmo for all her efforts over this time; and we’d like to wish her all the best of luck with the training scheme.

CRB checks

Criminal Records Bureau checks are essential for all adults sailing with young people on board John Laing - those on assessment as well as qualified sea staff. Please note that it takes several weeks or even a few months for checks to be completed once you have sent your form to OYT South. If you have been given a form and have not yet returned it, please do so as soon as possible if you hope to sail this season.

Food hygiene course trainer wanted

Can anyone recommend a qualified trainer to run basic food hygiene courses for OYT South sea staff?

Refit news

Lots of work completed this week as we had a good number of volunteers on the boat.

The deck, coachroof and cockpit have all been sanded and cleaned ready for painting. The hull has had two coats of paint. The skipper’s cabin has been painted; and various panels have been removed, sanded and had a first coat of paint. The forecabin has had almost one complete coat of paint; and the mast cabin is being primed. The workshop has been cleaned and partially painted. Work has begun on the new fire-proofing in the engine room. The fire extinguisher holders have been painted. The stern gland has been unpacked and is ready for repacking. Wolf and Dings have gone through the contents of the hardware locker and agreed that we have indeed been carrying spares for systems we no longer possess, so we can get rid of some of them!

Refit helpers this week were Wolf, Dings, Adam Lane, Nick Weetman, Simon Horan, Chris Higgins, Becca Causer, Julian Jansen van Rensburg, Phoebe, Mark Boggis, Dave “Tigger” Heffer, Caz, Alex “Leek” Evans, Laura, Steve Lacey, and Chris, Tristan & Joe from Contact Marine. Plus Bruce Ogilvie has just returned all the floorboards which he has been working on - many thanks for that.

It’s been excellent having so much help for the past few days; but there is a great deal left to do before the start of the season and the pressure is really on now to have everything ready for the coding inspection and the first voyage. We need lots more help, so please give Wolf a ring if you can spare any time at all.

Sea staff bookings

I've started confirming some early season bookings; if anyone else needs an urgent answer on your provisional bookings, please drop me a line!

For early season voyages we still need:

20-24 March - second mate
8-12 May - first mate
13-19 May - second mate
19-21 May - first and third mates (one must be female)
22-26 May - female second mate
27-30 May - first mate
31 May - 4 June - first and second mates (one female)
6-11 June - second and third mates
12-16 June - first mate

Lots of other vacancies after that - apart from Tall Ships voyages, there are spaces on most trips.

The mates training weekend 21-23 April is now FULL so we are starting to take bookings for the next one: 22-24 September (£150).

However, we still have four spaces on the longer adult voyage 30 April to 5 May (£275) - suitable for training, new prospective sea staff, group leaders, parents or anyone else who wants a first hand look at how we work at sea.

The prices for these adult voyages include £30 annual membership and £70 annual mates sailing fee, so once sea staff and prospective sea staff have paid this you can sail as often as you can manage in 2006 at no further cost.

Please email me to make sea staff bookings or reserve places on adult voyages.

Anyone looking for something a bit more adventurous over the summer should consider one of the legs of the Tall Ships Race series:

  • 4-8 July, Southampton to St Malo, £290 - delivery to race start. Arriving in St Malo gives the crew a chance to see all the hundreds of vessels assembled for the race (3 spaces)
  • 9-21 July, St Malo to Lisbon, £830 - first race (6 spaces).
  • 22-28 July, Lisbon to Cadiz, £420 - cruise in company with the rest of the fleet (3 spaces).
  • 29 July to 8 Aug, Cadiz to La Corunna, £700 - cruise in company with the rest of the fleet (8 spaces).
  • 9-19 Aug, La Corunna to Antwerp, £700 - second race (8 spaces).

Tall Ships rules allow us to take a maximum of four 15-year olds on each leg for these five voyages; all other crew members must be aged 16-25. As ever, most of our other voyages are open to people aged 12-25.

For crew bookings, call the office on 0870 241 2252 or email office@oytsouth.org .

Marketing day sails

We are still seeking bookings for marketing day sails, on Sat 6th and Sun 7th May this year. If you know anyone who would like to see the boat in action, with a view to booking a new group for a voyage, donating some money, or supporting us in other ways, please spread the word and make sure any new contacts know they would be welcome on one of those days (and either keep me or David Salmon informed). These days are also open to existing OYT South supporters who prefer not to come on full voyages but would like a short taste of life at sea in John Laing.
