Voyage News
John Laing has reached Lisbon after retiring from the Tall Ships Race earlier this week.

The race had started off Torbay on Sunday.  Light winds made the race a challenging experience but John Laing’s crew were keen to carry on.  The decision to stop racing and head for the nearest port was necessary because one of the crew had a worsening medical problem.  It was decided that medical treatment ashore was required.

This was a difficult decision for everyone, as the crew had worked really hard throughout the race.  It was clearly the right decision in the circumstances.

Many Thanks to the ambulance crew, port authorities and police at Leixoes, Portugal who met John Laing.  They helped ensure a smooth transfer to hospital for the patient, who is now recovering.

Thanks also to the medics on the vessels Lord Nelson and Falken who provided radio medical advice.

With the race over,  the crew took up a new challenge and completely took over the running of the boat for the passage from Lisbon.  This included the “crew“ skipper who was woken all through the night at exactly the same time as Skipper Mark Todd!

One other event that occurred this week was a massive electrical storm.  Having spotted the storm on radar appropriate precautions were taken including switching off all the instruments.  The chart plotter did however stop working at this time.  We are hugely grateful to Raymarine who are sending out a replacement plotter with sea staff who are joining this weekend.  Thanks to Raymarine’s help we are able to continue sailing, with an electronic navigation system.

John Laing is now changing crew over this weekend before a cruise in company with other Tall Ships from Lisbon to Cadiz.

OYT South - Annual Boat Show Dinner
We now have full details of the 3rd OYT South Annual Boat Show Dinner.  We will again be celebrating  and supporting  the activities of  OYT South, especially the winter refit expenses.   Last year’s event raised £7,500 - so we hope to beat that this year by raising £10,000.  About half of the money raised will go to OYT South.   We will also be raising money for CHASE Children’s Hospice Service, Naomi House Children’s Hospice and Teenage Cancer Trust, all of whom have run successful voyages with us this season.

The Dinner should prove to be an enjoyable and entertaining evening; commencing with a Champagne Reception, followed by Dinner, Speeches, a Balloon Raffle and an Auction – success is almost guaranteed !

This year’s speakers will include Mark Todd (Skipper, John Laing), representatives of the hospices + a surprise guest.

Last year’s Dinner was an extremely successful event attended by over 100 sea staff, sponsors and friends of the various charities.  We do hope that you will be able to come along this September and join the fun and bring as many friends as possible to support us.

The venue will be the same as last year:  The Royal Southern Yacht Club, Rope Walk, Hamble, on Friday, 15th September at 7.00 for 7.30pm.
Tickets are priced at £65 per person, and tables of 10 are currently available for £600.

To reserve your tickets please e:mail or phone David Salmon at the OYT South office on 0870 241 2252.  Payment can be made by credit card through the office.

If you can’t come along yourself but know someone who might be interested,  then please let them know.

If you have any questions about the Dinner, or would like to donate a prize for the Auction or Balloon Raffle then please make contact with
