OYT South bulletin 23rd June 2006

Latest news
Contact details over the summer
This will be the last bulletin from me for a few weeks as I am not at work over the summer; however, Mark Boggis has very kindly agreed to keep the bulletins going in my absence, so that you will still get news from the boat as well as any urgent messages. If you have information which you would like to see included in the bulletin, please email it to

Don’t forget that I shall not be picking up emails until mid-August, and no-one else has access to my inbox, so please don’t email me with anything that needs a swift reply! All OYT South queries should be directed to David Salmon on 0870 241 2252 or, apart from messages connected with the OYT South Annual Dinner (see below) which should be directed to Jo Rule at

Maintenance day, July 3rd
If you are planning to help with the maintenance day on July 3rd in Ocean Village, please don’t forget to let Wolf know you are coming (07771 771864) – he really needs to know exactly who plans to be there so he can organise all the jobs. It’s going to be an extremely busy day and we need plenty of support!

Adult voyages
We really need more bookings for the adult voyages in September: the weekend starting on the evening of Friday 22 September and finishing on Sunday 24th (£150) still has between six and nine spare berths (depending on currently unconfirmed reservations). The 5-night voyage from 25-30 September has 10 spare berths – please book on one of these voyages if you can and help us to make sure that we don’t have to cancel them!

Both voyages start and finish in Southampton, and are open to anyone aged 16+. The weekend is designed primarily for sea staff training, for current sea staff as well as anyone new who is thinking about getting involved and would like a chance to get to know the boat before trying to teach young people. It is also possible to include other adults who want to sail with us but can’t spare longer than a weekend.

The longer voyage is available for anyone at all aged 16+: potential sea staff, sponsors and donors, parents who are envious of offspring who have enjoyed sailing with us, shore supporters who seldom get a chance to sail, sea staff who would like to do an adult voyage for a change…no restrictions so please tell all your friends!

While I would normally take bookings for these trips, please book via David Salmon on 0870 241 2252 or while I am away.
Annual dinner
The OYT South Annual Dinner 2006 will take place on15th September, at the Royal Southern Yacht Club, Rope Walk, Hamble (as last year). Tickets available from Jo Rule ( at £65 per person - or gather a group of friends and book a table of 10.
Our charity partner for the dinner is once again CHASE children's hospice; but we shall also make donations from the proceeds to Naomi House children's hospice and to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Any donations for auction gifts and/or balloon raffle prizes gratefully received. Again, contact Jo Rule with details.

Potential crew members who will be aged 15 this summer should contact the office to discuss which legs have not already filled their quota of 15 year olds. All other voyages can take crew members aged 12-25.

The voyage from 16-22 September was fully-booked by a group, but it now appears there may be problems with their funding and it is possible that there may be spaces on this trip after all. Contact the office for latest information if you are interested in sailing between these dates.

Southampton Boat Show 15-24 September – volunteers needed
As usual, we have a stand at the Southampton boat show and we need lots of volunteers to help us make the most of the opportunity to speak to prospective crew members, future sea staff, shore volunteers and even possible funders. Please come along and help for a few hours or a day if you can. It would be great to have some more young crew members alongside our adult supporters. And all volunteers will also get the chance to look around this fabulous show. Contact David Salmon 0870 241 2252 to volunteer or for more information.

Voyage news
An ambitious plan was agreed at the start of this year’s voyage with Park House School, Newbury: the weather looked as though it might be possible to visit all five of the main inhabited Channel Islands in one week.

With no wind on the first night, the voyage began with a motor-sail to St Peter Port, Guernsey, arriving in the morning with time to go ashore. In the afternoon, John Laing was moved to an anchorage off Herm in time for a trip to the beach followed by a night at anchor. Next day involved a passage to St Helier, Jersey, with time ashore including a trip to the cinema. They stayed in harbour the following morning to do Competent Crew training, but left in the afternoon for Sark, where they went ashore on the following morning before leaving at lunchtime for Alderney, completing their list of five islands. There they came across Trinity Sailing’s Leader, and the two crews played games on the beach together. The following morning, John Laing’s crew went ashore again, this time to look round the town, before setting off to bring the boat back across the Channel.

This proved to be a fantastic sail in ideal conditions, with the crew doing racing headsail changes as they made 8, 9 or 10 knots for most of the way to the Nab, where the wind finally died, leaving them to motor up the Solent and arrive back in Ocean Village at 3 o’clock this morning.

Skipper Dave Carnson says this was an excellent crew, with group leaders Ed and Laura, as last year – everyone was filled with enthusiasm, keen to learn and eager to get involved in everything. It sounds as though they all had a brilliant week and we very much hope to see them again next year.

Thanks to sea staff Dave, Graeme, Cathy, Fraser, Dings and Liz.
