Voyage News
John Laing has had a great week. The voyage started with light winds, and a cross channel motor in glorious sunshine to Cherbourg. The next port of call was St. Peter Port, Guernsey where the crew spent a day resting after their sea time, and looking round the town. In the evening they motored to Alderney.
The next day John Laing and her crew set off to return to England. In mid channel, they stopped to stand-by a vessel with engine problems. The Alderney lifeboat subsequently arrived and the vessel was towed away. The wind then picked up allowing a great sail back, and then a quiet passage up through the Needles Channel in a glorious sunset.
This should sound to you like a pretty good week on John Laing, but as ever it was the people that really made the trip. Six crew came from a hospital ward in Manchester, organised by the Teenage Cancer Trust. Groups from the Teenage Cancer Trust generally get a lot from sailing on JL and this voyage was no exception. Also, as on previous voyages, our sea staff found sailing with young people from the Teenage Cancer Trust an inspirational experience. (More info at http://www.teenagecancertrust.org/)
We were also delighted to welcome on this voyage a group from The Wheatsheaf Trust. (More details at http://www.wheatsheaftrust.org/). This group was organised by Jonathan Cheshire. Jonathan now works for the Wheatsheaf Trust but was the director of the (then) Ocean Youth Club in the 1990s. Many Thanks to Jonathan for organising his crew. Skipper Dave Carnson thought that the participants found the voyage an eye-opening“ experience.
Many Thanks to Dave for fitting in two and a bit weeks on John Laing to provide Wolf with vital relief before the Tall Ships race. Thanks also to the rest of this weeks onboard team 1st Mate Graeme Cole, 2nd Mates John Snowden and Phoebe and last, but by no means least, Bosun Julian Watkins a.k.a. Dings“ and sometimes Dinghy Boy“.
At the time of writing (Friday night) John Laing is crewing up for a short adult weekend voyage organised by Pete Yeoman.

All other voyages can take crew members aged 12-25.
The voyage from 16-22 September was fully-booked by a group, but it now appears there may be problems with their funding and it is possible that there may be spaces on this trip after all. Shore Support Opportunities
Southampton Boat Show 15-24 September - volunteers needed
As usual, we have a stand at the Southampton boat show and we need lots of volunteers to help us make the most of the opportunity to speak to prospective crew members, future sea staff, shore volunteers and even possible funders. Please come along and help for a few hours or a day if you can. It would be great to have some more young crew members alongside our adult supporters. And all volunteers will also get the chance to look around this fabulous show. Contact David Salmon 0870 241 2252 office@oytsouth.org to volunteer or for more information.
