Voyage news
A mixed group this week – three students from Rob Butler’s school, plus a number of individuals from different backgrounds – all aged 12-15.

They had thought of getting to France, but one forecast suggested too much wind, while in reality there turned out to be too little. So instead they had some time in the Solent while people got the hang of the boat, and then – very unusually for John Laing – headed east.

The first night was spent in Portsmouth and the second in Cowes, where they met the Sea Cadets’ big power boat, TS John Jerwood. It is lucky they are good friends of ours because, as John Laing was preparing to come alongside, John Jerwood nipped in ahead and pinched our berth! Most startled of all was Dings, who had already been put ashore to take our lines, when John Jerwood appeared and just chucked him a heaving line. However, we have spent a lot of nights alongside John Jerwood so all was soon forgiven, as we arranged to followed them to Brighton the next day and spend another night tied up together.

This was followed by a day sail out of Brighton, and then a passage back on the last full day, arriving in Ocean Village at 2am.

It was a sunny week with lots of activity and sail changes on deck. The crew all learned a great deal, with three Competent Crew and one Start Yachting certificate awarded.

Many thanks to the sea staff: relief skipper Nick Crawford, plus John Smith, Rob Butler, Andy Shuttleworth, Phoebe (who was able to have a practice at being first mate for a while) and Dings – who had his 21st birthday on board – Happy Birthday Dings!

Sea staff bookings
For early season voyages we still need:
22-26 May - second mate
31 May - 4 June - second mate
30 June-2 July - first mate

There are also still some spaces in the autumn – email me if you want to sail then.

We are now taking bookings for the autumn mates training weekend 22-24 September (£150) and adult familiarisation voyage 25-30 September (£275).

Please email me to make sea staff bookings or reserve places on adult voyages.

Fundraising via internet shopping – consultation exercise
Many of you already use the link to Amazon on our home page ( ), so that a proportion of the purchase price of anything you buy from Amazon is donated to OYT South.

We’ve been offered the chance to work with another website which makes donations to charities via internet shopping with a wide range of shops ( ).
It isn’t the same system as Amazon (which is a straightforward percentage of anything you spend) – you can find out more on their site, including a section on how to get involved ( ). I wondered whether those of you who are interested in this sort of thing would like to take a look at the site and give me some feedback – is this something that might be worthwhile for us? Should we be promoting it? Email me with your views.
