John Laing has now completed the passage from Stockholm, Sweden to Szczecin, Poland. The people of Stockholm made John Laing and the other Tall Ships feel very welcome and this continued right to the end of the visit. The start of the race was offshore, so on Monday morning John Laing threaded her way out through the Stockholm archipelago, which was lined with crowds of cheering and waving Swedes. Monday night was spent at anchor alongside a Polish vessel.
On Tuesday morning, after some practice sailing, John Laing joined the 78 strong fleet for the start of the race to Poland. John Laing was perfectly placed to cross the race start line, when the wind died and the fleet was left wallowing. After a while the wind picked up and the race began. The forecast was for an easy sail with the wind blowing across the boat’s course but it soon became more challenging. The wind swung round and the next few days were a challenging “beat“ as the boat tacked at 45 degrees into the Force 5 to Force 6 winds, the waves and the weather. Although there was some respite on Wednesday morning, the weather continued like this for most of the rest of the race.
The strong winds were delaying many of the fleet, so the race committee decided to bring forward the race end. For Class C (John Laing’s group) the race ended at 0045 hrs (GMT) Friday 3 August. John Laing was then able to motor directly into the wind to the Polish coast to clear customs before going up the inland waterways to arrive alongside in the town of Szczecin around 8.30pm on Friday evening. More information about the Race on the web at www.sailtraininginternational.org.
The sea staff and crew are now looking forward to exploring Szczecin.
Many thanks to Skipper Mark Todd, 1st Mate Caroline White, 2nd Mate John Snowden, 2nd Mate Andy Royse and 3rd Mate Pingu. Special Mention for Bosun Laura Aldrich-Blake who I forgot last week.

Ocean Youth Trust South Celebration Supper 2007- Friday September 14
We’re once again holding a Celebration Supper at Chichester Yacht Club in support of OYT South so please check all your diaries, calendars, blackberrys etc. to check that you can join us on Friday September 14th – once again the date coincides nicely with the start of the Southampton Boat Show.
This year we have much to celebrate – first and foremost another most successful and enjoyable season with over 400 young people sailing and living together on nearly 50 separate voyages on “John Laing“ including a great expedition to the Baltic as part of the Tall Ships Races. Then there are some very exciting plans for the future – full details will be revealed at the Supper by Staff Skipper Mark Todd.
Our Special Guest this year will be Merfyn Owen, the internationally renowned Yacht Designer who was responsible for Ellen Macarthur’s record breaking yachts – Merfyn is also an ex OYT Skipper and a skipper of one of the BT Global Challenge yachts.
Here are the Voyage Instructions for the night:

Please do let me know if you can come and how many people you can bring along with you – could you perhaps raise a table of 8 for the reduced rate? One of the prime aims of these annual events is to introduce new faces to the positive impact which an OYT Voyage can have on the outlook and lives of young people.
I do hope you can come and look forward to hearing from you.
