* OYT South AGM 2008
The official notice and agenda for OYT South's Annual General Meeting on Friday 4th April at 1900hrs, in the Gosport office, is at the foot of this newsletter.
Please note that it includes a request for information from those wishing to stand for election as Trustees, which must be submitted to the office by close of play on Friday 21st March. We will then circulate information about potential new Trustees to members before the meeting.
* Refit news - 5 days till the launch; 17 days to the first proper voyage
Many thanks to all those who responded to last week’s desperate appeal for more help at refit. We’ve had a great team this week: Wolf, Liz, Max, Mattie, Bob Trimble, Eddie Harper, Rob Butler, Jocelyn Longworth, Derek Brown, Sarah McCullough, Annant Shah, Dave "Tigger" Heffer, Phil Runchman, Richard & Matt (thanks to Cathy Lacey for arranging for them to come), Karen Harris, Kat “Gizmo” Francis, Phillip Hetherington, Annie Holt, and Chris and Tristan from Contact Marine.
Thanks to all these people, the deck is virtually all painted (just one bit still being filled); Wolf’s heads are finally finished; the cockpit locker lids are back on; the anchors are almost back on; the hardware locker contents have been stowed; the galley is painted, except for the floor; the work on the rig is finished (including a new staysail sheet and a new topping lift); the cockpit has been painted, with a final coat going on today; a new ensign holder has been attached; the boathooks, oars etc. have had a coat of D1; the crew heads are back together; the steering gear is connected; a new fresh water pressure set pump has been installed; the lights are going up in the saloon; the bunk cushions and lee cloths have been repaired and are back on board, with the lee cloths now attached; a new Dacon rescue frame (for recovering a man overboard) has been delivered; most of the sails are back; the graphics on the hull have been done; we have a new emergency VHF aerial and new fire blankets; and our 5-year coding inspection has started.
* Refit help needed
This weekend at refit looks OK but we could definitely do with some more help on Monday if any of you could come along? John Laing goes back in the water next Wednesday; the masts will go in on Thursday; and we’ll move back round to Ocean Village on Friday. We would definitely like more help that weekend (15/16 March) and then on Monday we’ll have the compass swing. We also definitely need more people for the last few days, up till March 21st, including a team to help us move out of the refit house and get it all thoroughly cleaned – a vital job as it helps ensure that we get our deposit back!
Call 07771 771864 if you can do anything between today and March 21st, when the shakedown voyage starts. Do leave a message if Wolf doesn't answer, as he'll always call you back.
If you have never been to one of our refits before, you can find more information here. The key thing you need to know is that our refits require an inexhaustible supply of volunteer helpers, both skilled and unskilled. In 2006-7, ninety-five people contributed a total of 381 days of volunteer labour, and we need to match or beat that figure this year.
* 2008 bookings - including short notice vacancies
Owing to a group cancellation, we now have a full voyage available for 12 people:
21-24 April, starting and finishing in Southampton. We are very anxious to get this voyage filled again, otherwise it risks cancellation - please help! It's only £185 per person; but bursaries may be available if people cannot afford even this much. Please contact the office NOW if you or anyone you know might be interested. We could sell this as an adult voyage if we cannot fill it with under-25s.

15-19 September: Southampton, £275, places available tbc. We may have a booking for a 2-day voyage, 18-19 September, in which case we will offer a new short voyage, Mon – Weds 15-18 September.
12-16 Oct: Southampton, £250, places left tbc.
17-19 Oct (weekend): Southampton, £115, 12 places left.
If you can't find what you want on this availability list, do please keep checking the voyage programme as new vacancies keep coming up as provisional reservations aren't confirmed.

2009 sailing programme
We are just in the process of preparing our 2009 sailing programme. If you have any very specific requirements for a voyage in 2009 - for example, a school might want a voyage to fit into a scheduled Activities Week - do let us know as soon as possible, and we’ll try to write something suitable into the programme.
Just to get you excited in advance for summer 2009: we are hoping to take part in another Tall Ships race series in the Baltic. This will involve a number of voyages in June designed to get us to the start in Poland in early July (crew changeover ports still to be decided). We will then race from Gdynia to St Petersburg, in Russia, followed by a cruise to Turku, Finland, and then another race to Klaipeda, Lithuania, arriving in early August. We will then have a series of voyages in August to bring John Laing back to the UK (again, crew changeover ports still to be decided, though we are tempted by Copenhagen at some point…).
If you might be interested in taking part in any of this - and especially if you might want to make a full group booking - do talk to us now about options. We are also considering making one of the voyages in June, on the way to Poland, an adult voyage - worth considering for over-25s who don’t normally get this sort of chance to sail to more exciting places with us!

Job advertisement: OYT South General Manager - one week till closing date
The advertisement for the post of General Manager has now been widely publicised. A full job description, person specification and details of how to apply are on our website here. If you are interested in joining the team, with a view to taking over management of OYT South's shore-based operations when David Salmon retires in November, please read the documents and apply with a CV and covering letter before 14th March 2008.
We do have 5 or 6 spaces left for the September staff training voyage: 19-21 Sept (£150). Email me for bookings.
“Working with young people” course
Brian Eyres and Steve Lacey are offering a FREE pilot course on “Working with young people”, on Saturday 12th April in the Gosport office, 11am to 4pm, open to all OYT South sea staff. Email email@example.com, or call 01929 401696 (evenings only) if you are interested.
* Local support groups
If you live in any of the following areas and would like to help find local young people to come sailing, and raise a bit of money to help them do so, please get involved with one of our local support groups:
Andy Brown and David Shannon are making progress with plans for a Plymouth / SW support group: between them they have significant experience, but both work away from home quite a bit and are now looking for someone else, who may be around a bit more, to help them pull things together. If others in the area would like to get involved, email Andy
If you live in any other area and would be interested in helping to set up a local support group, please email me and I’ll try to put you in touch with other people in your area.
* Core refit team - long-term volunteers needed
One of the key factors in this year's refit has been the presence of volunteers who have been able to give us several weeks or months - in one case, almost the whole refit - providing vital continuity and developing experience on board. We shall be recruiting at least two full-time volunteers for the next refit, November 2008 to March 2009, so if you are considering a gap year or career break, why not think about joining the team next year?

New readers’ welcome and introduction
If you are reading the OYT South newsletter for the first time, I hope you will find it useful and interesting, and filled with opportunities for things you will want to get involved in. The newsletter is sent out virtually every week and contains all you need to know about voyages for young people or adults, becoming a volunteer, OYT South events, etc. Please feel free to join in any OYT South activities - nothing here is restricted to long-standing members or people who already know one another. New people are always very welcome!
If you feel that you don't yet know much about OYT South, you will learn more by keeping a regular eye on these newsletters; but for a lot of background information, take a look at the rest of this website.

Please note: - Everyone is welcome to attend, but only paid up members may vote on any resolution presented to the members. You may become a member on the night by appropriate application and payment.
Nominations for election to the board of Trustees must be received at the office at 8 North Meadow, Weevil Lane, Gosport PO12 1BP by close of play on Friday 21st March. This should include a brief outline of the nominee’s background and what they would bring to the benefit of the Trust, which will be circulated to members before the meeting, as well as a formal, signed, statement of the nominee’s willingness to stand for election.
Light refreshments will be available before the commencement of the meeting.
Any item you wish to be raised at the AGM must be forwarded in writing 7 days prior to meeting.
